Building a Biological Corridor
Sumaco Conservation is working to secure and connect key forest parcels around Sumaco Volcano, especially between Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park, Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary, and other nearby private and communal reserves. By protecting these strategic properties, we’re building a local biological corridor that keeps forest cover continuous along Sumaco’s southern slope.
This local corridor is designed to give wildlife room to move upslope as the climate warms—rather than leaving species trapped in isolated forest fragments. Each property we secure promotes gene flow, promoting healthy wildlife populations.
Our long-term vision is that this local corridor will form one of the core stepping stones in a region-wide biological corridor that connects lowland Yasuní National Park to highland Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park.
